A relationship between antimicrobial peptide gene expression and capacity of a selected shrimp line to survive a Vibrio infection ArchiMer
De Lorgeril, Julien; Gueguen, Yannick; Goarant, Cyrille; Goyard, Emmanuel; Mugnier, Chantal; Fievet, Julie; Piquemal, D; Bachere, Evelyne.
Understanding of antimicrobial defence mechanisms of penaeid shrimp should help in the design of efficient strategies for the management and disease control in aquaculture. In this study, we have specifically analysed the expression in circulating hemocytes of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) encoding genes, such as PEN2 and PEN3, ALF, crustin, lysozyme and a putative cysteine-rich peptide. We evidenced a relationship between the level of expression of some AMPs and the successful response of the shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, to circumvent a pathogenic Vibrio penaeicida infection. Additionally, significant differences in some AMP transcript amounts are evidenced between control, non-selected shrimp line and the third generation breeding of shrimp selected...

Aménagement des pêcheries côtières de Nord-Bretagne, algues-crustacés ArchiMer
Arzel, Pierre.
Today, the seaweed industry's main products are the alginates and carraghenanes. The industrial network faces many problems. However, it remains prosperous since it ranks fifth in the world for alginate production and third for caraghenanes'. This stability which seems safe on a middle term standpoint must not conceal the crisis which previously hit Fucus' exploitation. Rightly so, being harvested until approximately 1950 for soil amendment purposes, coastal kelp (i.e. Fucus), was replaced by chemical fertilizers. Brittany's production which was reaching 180 000 cubic metre in the twenties, close to 200 000 tons of fresh kelp, would have become non existent if it had not been converted into seaweed meal for livestock feed. The market demand was then...

Anticholinesterase effect of eserine (physostigmine) in fish and crustacean species BABT
Monserrat,José M.; Bianchini,Adalto.
The kinetic characteristic (Km) of cholinesterase from the crab Chasmagnathus granulata, the shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis and the fish Odontesthes bonaeriensis were compared and correlated with the anticholinesterasic effect of eserine (physostigmine). For the crustaceans, the estimated Km values were about 5-8 times higher than that estimated for the fish (0.04 mM). In the crab and the shrimp, the concentration of eserine which inhibited 50% of cholinesterase activity (IC50) was estimated as 5.33x10-4 and 4.33x10-4 mM, respectively. In both cases, it was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that estimated for the fish larvae (7.43x10-5 mM). A high Km could reflect a lower affinity of the cholinesterase for its natural substrate, acetylcholine, or...

The symbiotic shrimp Rimicaris exoculata dominates the macrofauna inhabiting the active smokers of the deep-sea mid Atlantic ridge vent fields. We investigated the nature of the host mechanisms controlling the vital and highly specialized ectosymbiotic community confined into its cephalothoracic cavity. R. exoculata belongs to the Pleocyemata, crustacean brooding eggs, usually producing Type I crustins. Unexpectedly, a novel anti-Gram-positive type II crustin was molecularly identified in R. exoculata. Re-crustin is mainly produced by the appendages and the inner surfaces of the cephalothoracic cavity, embedding target epibionts. Symbiosis acquisition and regulating mechanisms are still poorly understood. Yet, symbiotic communities were identified at...

Density, abundance and extractive potential of the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) (Brachyura, Ocypodidae): subsidies for fishery management Anais da ABC (AABC)
PINHEIRO,MARCELO A.A.; SOUZA,MARCELO R.; SANTOS,LUCIANA C.M.; FONTES,ROBERTO F.C..
ABSTRACT Ucides cordatus is a relevant fishery resource of Brazilian mangroves and requires legal normative to sustainable use based on stock assessment and management. This study evaluated some population parameters (structure, density, abundance, fishery potential and stock) of this crab species in Brazil Southeast (São Paulo, State), discussing the use of the results to delineate fishery management strategies. Density was monthly evaluated (September 1998 to August 1999), using five sample quadrats of 2x2 m. Density (ind.m-2) was indirectly estimated by counting the opened (with biogenic activity) and closed galleries, and contrasted with flooding level by tides using the vertical distribution of macroalgae in the base of trees. Density of U. cordatus...

Effects of serotonin and fluoxetine on blood glucose regulation in two decapod species BJMBR
Santos,E.A.; Keller,R.; Rodriguez,E.; Lopez,L..
One of the best known crustacean hormones is the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH). However, the mechanisms involved in hormone release in these animals are poorly understood, and thus constitute the central objective of the present study. Different groups of crustaceans belonging to diverse taxa (Chasmagnathus granulata, a grapsid crab and Orconectes limosus, an astacid) were injected with serotonin, fluoxetine, or a mixture of both, and glycemic values (C. granulata and O. limosus) and CHH levels (O. limosus) were determined after 2 h in either submerged animals or animals exposed to atmospheric air. Both serotonin and fluoxetine caused significant hyperglycemia (P<0.05) after injection into the blood sinus of the two species, an effect enhanced...

Litopenaeus vannamei stylicins are constitutively produced by hemocytes and intestinal cells and are differentially modulated upon infections ArchiMer
Farias, Natanael Dantas; Falchetti, Marcelo; Matos, Gabriel Machado; Schmitt, Paulina; Barreto, Cairé; Argenta, Nicolas; Rolland, Jean-luc; Bachère, Evelyne; Perazzolo, Luciane Maria; Rosa, Rafael Diego.
Stylicins are anionic antimicrobial host defense peptides (AAMPs) composed of a proline-rich N-terminal region and a C-terminal portion containing 13 conserved cysteine residues. Here, we have increased our knowledge about these unexplored crustacean AAMPs by the characterization of novel stylicin members in the most cultivated penaeid shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. We showed that the L. vannamei stylicin family is composed of two members (Lvan-Stylicin1 and Lvan-Stylicin2) encoded by different loci which vary in gene copy number. Unlike the other three gene-encoded antimicrobial peptide families from penaeid shrimp, the expression of Lvan-Stylicins is not restricted to hemocytes. Indeed, they are also produced by the columnar epithelial cells lining the...

Manuel des protocoles de campagne halieutique. Campagnes de surveillance de la pêche côtière des crustacés du site de Flamanville CRUSTAFLAM ArchiMer
Schlaich, Ivan; Miossec, Dominique.
Fishery and ecological studies have been carried out by Ifremer as part of the environnement monitoring of the nuclear power plant of Flamanville ( programme supported by "Electricité de France"). Their aim is to follow the natural fluctuations of the major species in the previous years and evaluate the impact of the power plant on the local fishery from the moment it has begun to operate. This paper presents the data collected between 1977 and 2002 and the creation of a naturel reserve which induced a modification of the relative index calculation and the introduction of a precise lobster numbering in the reserve. These points are described here with the sampling methodology and the tagging technique used. The associated data base specification is given...

Anti-lipopolysaccharide factors (ALFs) are antimicrobial peptides with a central β-hairpin structure able to bind to microbial components. Mining sequence databases for ALFs allowed us to show the remarkable diversity of ALF sequences in shrimp. We found at least seven members of the ALF family (Groups A to G), including two novel Groups (F and G), all of which are encoded by different loci with conserved gene organization. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that gene expansion and subsequent diversification of the ALF family occurred in crustaceans before shrimp speciation occurred. The transcriptional profile of ALFs was compared in terms of tissue distribution, response to two pathogens and during shrimp development in Litopenaeus vannamei, the most...

Metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) from New Caledonia: Laboratory and field studies ArchiMer
Metian, Marc; Hedouin, Laetitia; Eltayeb, Mohamed M.; Lacoue-labarthe, Thomas; Teyssie, Jean-louis; Mugnier, Chantal; Bustamante, Paco; Warnau, Michel.
The present work aimed at better understanding metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the edible Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris, using both laboratory and field approaches. In the laboratory, the bioaccumulation kinetics of Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, and Zn have been investigated in shrimp exposed via seawater and food, using the corresponding gamma-emitting radiotracers (Ag-110m, Cd-109, Co-57, Cr-51, and Zn-65) and highly sensitive nuclear detection techniques. Results showed that hepatopancreas and intestine concentrated the metals to the highest extent among the blue shrimp organs and tissues. Moulting was found to play a non negligible detoxification role for Co, Cr and, to a lesser extent, Zn. Metal retention by L stylirostris widely varied (from...

New species of Temnocephala (Platyhelminthes, Temnocephalida) ectosymbiont on vulnerable species of aeglids (Crustacea, Anomura) from the Neotropical Region Biota Neotropica
Seixas,Samantha Alves; Dametto,Norton; Périco,Eduardo.
Abstract: A new species of the genus Temnocephala Blanchard, 1849 from southern Brazil was found on two species of anomuran crustaceans, Aegla spinipalma Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994 and Aegla grisella Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994, the latter classified as a vulnerable species by the "Lista de Referência da Fauna Ameaçada de Extinção no Rio Grande do Sul. Decreto no 41.672, de 11 junho de 2002". The crustaceans were collected from a tributary creek of the Forqueta river, Perau de Janeiro, Arvorezinha and a tributary creek of the Fão river, Pouso Novo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; both localities belong to the Sub-Basin of Forqueta River. The new species differs from seven other temnocephalans epibionts on Aegla Leach, 1820, by having the following...

Nursery performance of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Crustacea: Decapoda: Penaeidae) postlarvae in different salinities Rev. Bras. Zool.
Costa,Rafael F.; Yasumaru,Fanny A.; Lemos,Daniel.
Nursery performance, development, and RNA:DNA ratio were investigated in Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) postlarvae acclimated from a salinity of 30‰ to higher (35‰) or lower (16, 22 and 29‰) salinities and reared for 20 days. Overall, higher final weight, yield and growth rate were observed at a salinity of 29‰. RNA:DNA ratio indicated reduced growth potential at a salinity of 35‰. Low salinities resulted in more developed individuals. Thus, early postlarval F. paulensis should not be stocked in salinities higher than that of the original hatchery, otherwise in lower salinities postlarvae should be older and/or have an extended nursery phase. Results may assist in the development of nursery rearing protocols for F. paulensis, an...

Occurrence of the Indo-Pacific freshwater prawn Macrobrachium equidens Dana 1852 (Decapoda, Palaemonidae) on the coast of Brazilian Amazonia, with notes on its reproductive biology Anais da ABC (AABC)
Maciel,Cristiana R; Quadros,Manoel L; Abrunhosa,Fernando; Bastos,Sandra; Schneider,Horacio; Sampaio,Iracilda.
The freshwater prawn Macrobrachium equidens, which is native species of the Indo-Pacific Region, was recorded for the first time on the Amazon coast of Brazil. This species was found to inhabit the same environment as two native Macrobrachium species, M. amazonicum and M. acanthurus, and is morphologically very similar to the latter. The identification of the species was confirmed by the genetic analysis of sequences of the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase (COI) gene. A detailed description of the morphological features and reproductive biology of M. equidens in this new environment is presented.

The euryhaline white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei lives in both coastal and oceanic areas through ontogeny. Its osmoregulation pattern and variations in its tolerance to salinity are partially known from several studies under different experimental conditions (developmental stages, salinities and acclimation procedures). Although L. vannamei is recognized as one of the most euryhaline penaeid species, with adults and juveniles exhibiting an hyper-hypo-osmoregulatory pattern and being able to tolerate a wide salinity range, little is known on larval and early postlarval strategies to cope with salinity fluctuations. In order to establish their euryhalinity range and to fully understand the ontogenetic changes in L. vannamei osmoregulatory pattern, we...

Population structure of Callichirus major (Say 1818) (Crustacea: Callianassidae) and conservation considerations at Southeast coast of São Paulo, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Moschetto,Fernanda Augusto; Borges,Roberto Pereira; Duarte,Luis Felipe de Almeida.
Abstract Globally, there is limited knowledge about management and conservation of Callianassidae family. Their catches seem to be recently increasing in several parts of the world and evidences raise concern on the need of specialized literature focused on populations monitoring. At Southeast of Brazil, the species Callichirus major (Say 1818), known as the ghost shrimp, is frequently captured for use as bait in sport fishing and, according to previous studies, the overexploitation could threaten the population. The aim of this study was evaluated over a year this harmful human pressure on the species C. major in two beaches contiguous but susceptible to different anthropogenic impacts due to the existence of legislation on one beach that prohibits the...
